Bettye was the daughter of Jonas Thomas and Alice Mathis Thomas. She was educated in the Macon County School System and was a Class of 1964 graduate of D. F. Douglass High School in Montezuma, Georgia. She was selected "Miss D. F. Douglass High School". She attended Fort Valley State University where she earned her Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education in the Class of 1969. She received her Master Degree in Elementary Education form Fort Valley State University and her Education Specialist Degree from Troy State University in Troy, Alabama. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Fort Valley Alumni Chapter, the Fort Valley State University Alumnae Association and the Retired Teacher's Association. She was employed with the Houston County Board of Education as a Teacher until her retirement after 30 years of service. She joined the Shade Arnold Baptist Church in Montezuma, Georgia as a youth. She later joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Fort Valley, Georgia where she served on the Usher Board and the Missionary Board.
She was married to Clyde Morris Zachery in 1969, they had 3 children. She was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Dorothy Hooks, Alice Mae Lofton and Estella Kendrick and 1 brother, James Thomas.

2 Sons: Richard Thompson and Samuel Wayne West(Katriece).
3 Sisters: Mary D. Thomas, Barbara Ann Parker and Joan Granville(Robert).

2 Grandchildren: Samaria West and Brandon Thompson.

Services were held Friday, March 24, 2023 at 12PM in the Sanctuary of Shiloh Baptist Church in Fort Valley, Georgia.
