Roy Theo Hayden, 82, of Belle, Mo., died Saturday, March 22, 2003, in Jefferson City, Mo.
He was born Sept. 26, 1920, near Oak Grove, one of eight children born to Robert Junior Hayden and Flory Mae Humbard Hayden. He grew up on a small dairy farm in Carroll County. He attended high school in Arkansas and began attending Arkansas Tech at Russellville. During college he joined the National Guard unit.

On Dec. 20, 1940, he married Irene Marguerite Carter. He was called into active duty in 1941, and was stationed in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, for almost three years. He was later assigned to serve in the military in France and England. Because he entered the service with two years of college, he was able to enroll in classes at the University of Paris, France, and the University of Shrivenhorn, England. After the war, he returned to Arkansas and graduated with a master's degree in agricultural education from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Mr. Hayden's wife Irene also completed a master's degree from the University of Arkansas. In the fall of 1955, they both took teaching jobs at the Belle High School. In 1966, Mr. Hayden resigned his teaching position and took a job as an extension agent for the University of Missouri. He retired after 23 years as an extension agent in 1988.

In 1996, Irene died of lung cancer. She was buried in the Hale Cemetery near Oak Grove.

On March 21, 1998, Mr. Hayden accepted a new family and married Mildred Nie, who survives him. Also surviving are two daughters, Sharon Gray and husband Dennis of St. James, Mo., and Lynn Hayden of Columbia, Mo.; two sons, Terry Hayden and wife Verita of Centertown, Mo., and James Hayden and wife Dianna of Tampa, Fla.; a foster son, Bob Dahms and wife Jean of Little Rock; a stepdaughter, Peggy Leonard and husband David of Belle; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Della Bradley of Berryville; and a sister-in-law, Luella Hayden of Oak Grove.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Carter Hayden; four brothers, Grant, Joseph, Jim, and John Hayden; and two sisters, Mae Hayden and Nora Brown.

Services were held on Wednesday, March 26, at the First Baptist Church in Belle, with Bro. Jimmy Bickell officiating. Interment was in the Hale Cemetery. Visitation was at Sassmann's Chapel in Belle.
