Vietnam veteran and Naval Seaman, Caldwell graduated from Gardiner High School in 1967 and later, the Diver's School of Technology, Seattle, WA. He served four years in the United States Coast Guard and worked for a number of years on the Islesboro Ferry, Edmund Muskie. Caldwell was a passenger aboard the ill-fated Downeast Airlines Flight 46 that crashed at Owls Head, ME. He left behind a wife and three children.
