Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Roberta Leslie Kirkwood was the daughter of Sir Robert Kirkwood (1904-1984) chairman of the Jamaica Sugar Manufacturing Association, and Lady (Sybil G. Attenborough, 1989-1977) Kirkwood. Before marrying Major Nicholas Collin (1989-2004) in 1962, she worked for a time as an actress and later became experienced in landscape gardening. In 1973, she married Cyrus W. Merrell (1929-2000). She was returning from a visit to England aboard Downeast Airlines Flight 46 when it crashed at Owl's Head, ME. She was survived by her husband and a son.
