Flo grew up with three siblings. She graduated from the Girls Catholic High School in nearby Hays and earned a cosmetology certificate.
She met Eugene Dreiling in Hays, and they were married in 1952. They quickly started a family, beginning a journey that saw Gene's accounting career with Standard Oil/Amoco take them from western Kansas to Casper, Wyoming, and then to Denver, Chicago and finally Tulsa.
Daughter Peggy Uppenkamp fondly remembers hours in the kitchen as a girl, learning to cook with her mom. "I also remember one time when we were readying our house for a holiday dinner and she and I were dancing as we cleaned the house," Peggy said. "She was always game to jump in and participate in the fun."
In her later decades, Flo was a devoted volunteer at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. She also was an accomplished seamstress.
Susan recalls many days golfing together and, as Flo got older, sharing long walks through the neighborhood. "She showed me key aspects to her strong golf game: It's not necessary to hit the ball farther, but to keep it in the middle of the fairway, and always have a pretty swing," Susan said. "Mom consistently beat me."
For her son Terry Dreiling, a cooking show on TV or the sight of a ceramic piece in a craft store now can trigger memories of the things Flo did for him when he was young. "So many talents and skills she had that continually pop up throughout the day," he said.
Flo was most proud of her children -- and later her grandchildren.
She and Gene enjoyed sharing Tulsa with their youngest grandson, Drew, who spent countless days in their home. "He got to experience the same love and care as a child that I did from Mom -- and enjoy her cooking as well," son Tim Dreiling said.
Flo was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Clarence and her sisters, Ethel Wolf and Mary Ellen Dinges. In March 2021, she lost her beloved Gene.
She is survived by all four of their children: Terry Dreiling of Littleton, Susan Dreiling of Littleton, Peggy (Glenn) Uppenkamp of Black Lake, New Mexico, and Tim (Lori) Dreiling of Tulsa. Eight grandchildren -- Tom, Jon and Kim Murray; Molly (Kevin) and Jack Uppenkamp; Matt (Wendy) and Chris Dreiling; and Drew Dreiling -- and the next generation, now five great-grandchildren and counting, will miss Grammy while remembering the many years they've been blessed to have her in their lives.
