Obituary from The Colorado Springs Gazette, Jan. 30, 2001

Even after Glen Justus retired from teaching 23 years ago, his students would still come to call.

Justus, 89, died Monday. He retired in 1977 after 50 years of teaching in Colorado Springs.

"He had students, who are now 60 years old, (who'd) continue to come back and tell him what an impact he had on their lives," said his son, Jim Justus.

Glen Justus taught American history at Palmer High School and then Coronado High School. He also coached baseball, football and basketball.

"He loved (teaching) - he wouldn't have done anything else," Jim Justus said.

Jim Justus said his father remembered most of the students he taught. "He used to run into former students and recognize them by their voice," he said. "He could remember what year he had them in his classes, and he could remember lots of specific things about them."

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1939 to 1943. He was a staff sergeant.

He was born Jan. 25, 1912, in Spokane, Wash. He married Helen Mary (Keeth) Justus on Sept. 21, 1940. He is survived by his son, Jim; his daughter, Patricia Portman; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; a sister, Leona Price; and six brothers, Harley, Byron, Ray, Meryl, Gene, Gordon and half brother Walter Henry Justus Jr.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou St. Burial will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 S. Sheridan Blvd., Denver.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Rocky Mountain Chapter, 2930 Austin Bluffs Parkway, Colorado Springs 80918.
