Born in Wollenberg, son of Joseph Kern and Sara Maier. Henry immigrated to New York in 1859 sailing from France per his 1904 passport application. He became a naturalized citizen in 1870. Henry married Fannie Kakeles 20 March 1872 in New York City. For several years he was employed as a stabler. In the 1890s the Kerns moved to Newark, New Jersey, where Henry was employed by D. Wolff and Co. By 1906 he had become its president.
