CUTS THROAT RATHER THAN GO TO ASYLUM
Millard McCartney Out on Parole Visit Becomes Violent

Rather than be returned to the Athens State Hospital for the Insane, Millard McCartney, 55, Warner Avenue, slashed his throat, severing his windpipe, with a butcher knife, this morning at 6:30 o'clock, just as sheriff's officers were arriving to take him into custody. His daughter, Gladys, had a finger cut off in the struggle to keep her father from killing himself. McCartney is now in a critical condition at the City Hospital.

McCartney returned from the asylum last Tuesday and has been violent several times since, sharpening up knives, wearing them strapped to him, and threatening to kill his wife and children. He became violent this morning after his wife and oldest daughter had left for work.

At 6 o'clock, the sheriff's office received a call to the house, and Sheriff A. D. Immell and Deputies Clyde McGee and Arthur Crago answered. When McCartney saw them arrive, he ran into the garden and began sawing his throat with the knife. The officers overpowered him and, after handcuffing him to an ambulance cot, rushed him to the hospital, where Drs. L. T. and J. W. Franklin attended him. Because of his severed windpipe, the anesthetic had to be administered through the cut throat instead of the mouth.

McCartney became violent after coming from under the anesthetic and, in spite of severe loss of blood, had to be strapped to his bed.
