Mary D'Angelo Obituary
Sister Mary D'Angelo, 74, Vicar of the Immaculate Conception Vice Province of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at Osimo Hospital in Italy. Born in Penne, Pescara, Italy, on June 30, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Guido and Giannina D'Angelo and recently returned to her homeland after forty-two years of missionary work in America. Sister Mary entered the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi on May 5, 1962, professed Temporary Vows on May 8, 1963, and professed Perpetual Vows on January 6, 1968, all in Assisi, Italy. Sister Mary began her missionary assignment in 1975 at the former St. Hyacinth's Seminary in Granby. For fifteen years she served at the Seminary and at the Franciscan Friars Novitiate in Ellicott City, MD, before returning to minister in Chicopee and Holyoke. Sister Mary served as Vice Provincial Superior and Vicar of her Vice Province along with tending to needs of hundreds of families in the St. Stanislaus Basilica Ministry of Care Bereavement Program. Sister Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Gabriela. Along with her relatives in Italy (two brothers, Gaetano and his wife, Pietro and his wife, and her sister, Lena and her husband, and many nieces and nephews), Sister Mary is survived by her Franciscan family: the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi and the Franciscan Friars Minor Conventual (OFM Conv.). She also leaves many dear friends she has made through her ministry. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Sister Mary on February 24 in Penne, Pescara, Italy. A Memorial Mass for Sister Mary will be held Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 6:30 PM at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr, 566 Front St., Chicopee, MA 01013. Memorial contributions may be made to the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi, 1039 Northampton St., Holyoke, MA 01040. Grateful to the Lord for the wonderful gift of Sister Mary's life and vocation, we offer our prayers for the repose of her soul.
