Brian Edward Abbott was a flight instructor during World War II for the US Air Force. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps on March 16, 1942 in Norfolk, Massachusetts, as a private, and moved through the ranks quickly. He first trained at Maxwell Field in Alabama. Gunter was situated in Montgomery, Montgomery, Alabama - the capital city, and had been a military training base since 1940; established due to a need for a military flying school during World War II. Now known as Gunter Annex, this is still a US Air Force Base.

Brian is the second of three children and the youngest son of Royal Kilburn Abbott, Sr. and Leila Muriel (Ruegg) Abbott.

Brian attended Dartmouth College, class of 1939.
