Charles was the sixth of nine children of W. Furman Marshall and Susannah Trimmer Marshall.

He married Fannie Snyder on June 2, 1838. They had five children: Mary about 1839, Rhoda about 1843, John about 1844, George about 1846 and Peter about 1849. Peter died as a child.

Charles was a farmer and a Hunterdon Co. freeholder. He resided in the Cherryville section of Franklin Twp.

His obituary in Dennis Sutton's extracts from 'The Hunterdon County Democrat', Aug. 29, 1876, Vol. 39, No. 1 stated:

"A man named Charles Marshall, living near Sandy Ridge, committed suicide on Saturday of week before last by taking laudanum. He formerly lived at Quakertown, and was a man of some means. Within the past year he seems to have had considerable bad luck and he became discouraged. He leaves a family."

The Saturday a week before the newspaper edition was Aug. 19, 1876, but his gravestone says that he died on Aug. 17, 1876. It is likely that the obituary is correct since it was written closer to his death. That is the date of death chosen for this memorial.

He was buried in Lower Dunkard Cemetery in Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., which is the same as the one listed below.

I would be more than happy to transfer this memorial to a descendant. Please click on my name, below, to email me.
