Architect. Martha Ann Cassell Thompson was the daughter of Ann Mason and architect Albert Cassell. She and her siblings, Charles Cassell and Alberta Jeannette Cassell, attended Cornell University School of Architecture, where she and her sister were the first African American women to graduate from the department with a bachelor of architecture.
Martha worked for an architectural firm in St. Louis, and then with architect Philip Hurbert Frohman in Washington DC. Martha was the chief restoration architect for the National Cathedral in Washington DC. She also was a skilled pianist. In 1948 she married Dr. Victor Thompson, a medical student, and they had one child, a daughter who also became an architect.
