Dorothy Ann Benedict, 74, of Leawood, KS, passed away peacefully at home with her loving family by her side on Saturday, March 1, 2008.

Dorothy was born September 2, 1933 to Edward and Laura (Vosberg) Herrlinger at their farm in Dovray, MN. She attended grades one through six at a one-room school house and finished school in Westbrook, MN with graduation in June of 1951. She attended Augustana College at Sioux Falls, SD and graduated with a teaching degree. She taught school for one year in White, SD and found this small rural community of several hundred people too confining for a young woman so she headed off to Minneapolis, MN. It was in Minneapolis she met her future husband Jim on a blind date. They were married on January 19, 1957 during Jim's senior year at the University of Minnesota. They just celebrated their 51st anniversary. Work took them to Pittsburgh, PA; Denver, CO; St. Louis, MO and finally in January of 1973 to Kansas City. Before retiring in 2000, Dorothy worked 25 years for the Blue Valley School District. Her hobbies were flower gardening, reading, collecting cook books and "using" them, and all types of puzzles. Dorothy had a keen mind, quick wit and dry sense of humor. She will be missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Jim; sons Gregory of Baltimore, MD, Scott and wife Heidi of Jacksonville, FL; granddaughters Jennifer and Lauren; brother Glen of Cumberland, WI; brother Gary of Alexandria, MN; sister Jenell Hoff of Rapid City, SD; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dorothy's name may be made to Ward Parkway Presbyterian Church, Odyssey Hospice, 800 E. 101st Terr., Ste. 150, Kansas City, MO 64131; and Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 2141 Rosecrans Ave., Ste. 7000, El Segundo, CA 90245. The family would like to thank the following for their compassionate and professional care: Dr. Drisko and her team at the University of Kansas Medical Center; Dr. Williamson and his team at the University of Kansas Cancer Center; and Shirley Spillman and her team at Odyssey Hospice. (Arrangements: Mt. Moriah & Freeman 816-942- 2004)
