Dr. Boone had a distinguished career in the US Army attaining the rank of Brigadier General and receiving a Bronze Star for bravery in combat in Viet Nam. Following his military career, he joined the medical faculty at UNC, teaching, doing research and caring for patients as a neurosurgeon, with subspecialty expertise in vascular neurosurgery. In 1982 he joined the staff at WakeMed where he was elected Medical Staff President for 1989. He was awarded the Governor's Order of the Long Leaf Pine in recognition of his many years of outstanding service to the people of North Carolina.

He was survived by his wife, Dr. Susan Pate, his five children: Stephen Boone, Michael Boone, Laura Jones, Chris Boone, Emily Boone and his 11 grandchildren.
