Born June 28, 1916 at Breeze Hill in Clark County, she was the daughter of the late David Spurgin and Ruth Coleman Gay. She was a graduate of St. Agatha Academy and attended the University of Kentucky. During her professional career she was an accountant with various Lexington companies, was a member of the Junior League of Lexington, Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumni Association and the National Society of Colonial Dames in Kentucky. She was a former member of the board of the Lexington Public Library, serving one year as chairwoman and attended the garden at the Bodley-Bullock House. She was a member of Central Christian Church in Lexington for more than 50 years.
