Donald E. Swartz Jr. passed away on January 16, 2024. He was 90 years old. Mr. Swartz was born on January 14, 1934 in West Middlesex, Pa., to Donald E. Swartz Sr. and Mildred C. Mahan Swartz.

Don graduated from Hickory High School (Hermitage) in 1951. He earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Youngstown State University.

On July 9, 1955 he married Joann Bentley. They celebrated 52 years together until Joann's death in May of 2008. Together they had two children. Pam (Sopher) arrived in 1958 and Bentley in 1961.

They were blessed with two wonderful grandchildren, Anne Sopher of Boardman, OH and Joe Swartz of Bozeman, MT.

Don loved gardening, hunting, playing Euchre, Jeeps and most things outdoors.

He never missed a little league game, a track meet or a chance to hunt rabbits with Bentley and their beagle "Butch". He was at all of the dance recitals and musicals Pam participated in with an 8mm camera and very bright lights. He was a dedicated husband, father and family man, and a very special grandpa as well.

Don retired in 1990 after 32 years in banking as a VP and Auditor of Integra Bank (originally McDowell National Bank), now PNC bank. His banking education consisted of The Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin, School of Bank Auditing, Richmond, VA, and Management Training at Penn State University, Shenango Valley Campus. He was a past director of the Mercer County Chapter American Institute of Banking, a member of the Hermitage Rotary Club and served as a Major in the commercial division of the United Way of Mercer County. Don was active in the Sharon Elks #103 and the Masons Lodge #810. He served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army.

Don was a longtime resident of Hermitage but more recently (2022) he lived at the Heritage at St. Pauls in Greenville, PA. He was a member of the Hickory United Methodist Church and served as church treasurer, audit committee and administrative board member for several years.

Don is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his daughter Pam, step-grandson Gregory Paul Sopher, a sister Betty Rowe (Tom) West Middlesex, a brother Stu Swartz (Bea) Hermitage, PA, as well as his mother and father in law (Joseph and Ethel Bentley).

He is survived by a sister Gail Snyder (Ron) of MD and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of the incredible folks at St. Pauls that helped Don for the last year and a half. Thanks to The Springs nursing staff as well as Gentiva Hospice nurses and staff.
