Pfc Waddell, a resident of Queens, New York enlisted in March 1942 and subsequently volunteered for parachutist duty. He may have joined the 508th at Camp Mackall, NC after completing jump school.

He probably was with the 508th when the regiment jumped into Normandy on D-Day and endured 33 days of fighting before the regiment was relieved.

He certainly jumped into Holland on September 17, 1944 as a member of the 508th's Company B in Operation Market-Garden. He was killed in action two days later and was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.

John's brother, 2Lt Charles F Waddell was killed in the crash of a B26B Marauder and is buried next to John. See Find A Grave Memorial# 56376151
