Musician. Shaped by the musical collections of his father, Lindley developed a passion for music at an early age. As a burgeoning multi-instrumentalist, he could play the ukulele, banjo and fiddle before his tenth birthday. By the time he reached his teenage years, his prodigious talents had been acknowledged by a number in the music scene. He was a five-time winner of the California-based Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest. From 1966 to 1970, he helmed the psychedelic group Kaleidoscope which released four major label albums under the Epic Records umbrella. Following the band's dissolution, he relocated to England where he played alongside the folk artist Terry Reid. It was during this time that Lindley provided his talents as a session-touring musician for a number of famous acts including: Warren Zevon, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and fellow multi-instrumentalist Ry Cooder. From 1972 to 1980, Lindley was in the spotlight as a key backing member of Jackson Browne's band. A signature tune on which he was featured was the group's cover of the Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs' single "Stay." Lindley's high falsetto vocals and slide guitar were a staple of the performance. Following his departure from Browne's group, he formed the band El Rayo-X which lasted from 1981 to 1989. Lindley was well known for his immense collection of varied musical instruments of which he owned several thousands. He was so adept at such a wide variety of instruments that Acoustic Guitar magazine referred to him as a "maxi-instrumentalist." In concerts, Lindley wore garish-colored polyester shirts with color-clashing pants, garnering him the nickname, "The Prince of Polyester." During his lengthy career, he was honored with numerous Grammy Award nominations and a nod for the Independent Music Awards' Best Album.
