Sam was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelors Degree. He married Donna Bailey on Dec. 25, 1949. He was a manager of over 70 farms in Iowa and Illinois. He later became a realtor in the Quad Cities. He was a scout leader and a private pilot. He and his wife Donna had four children - Sam, Gail, Bruce and Steve.
