Anne Boleyn, aunt of a much more famous Anne Boleyn, was a daughter of Sir William Boleyn (d.1505) and Lady Margaret Butler (d.1539/40). Anne was born at Bickling Hall, Norfolk. Her birth date is problematic. Some sources give her birth date as 28 Nov. 1475, some give it as 18 Nov. 1476. However, since there appears to have been an earlier Anne who died on 31 Oct. 1479, these dates can't be right. I've just put 29 Nov. 1479 as a guess.

Anne married Sir John Shelton (d.1539) around 1497, and they had 10 children. Anne was at the court of Henry VIII during her niece's ill fated marriage to him. She was named Governess to Princess Mary, Henry's daughter by his first wife, Katherine of Aragon, which must have been a very difficult position to hold. After the younger Anne Boleyn's execution in 1536, the Sheltons retired to their manor in Norfolk, where they often sheltered their great niece, Elizabeth, during the reign of her sister, Queen Mary. Elizabeth was sometimes hidden by them in the tower at St. Mary's Church. Lady Shelton's will was proved 8 Jan. 1556/7, so she did not live to see Elizabeth become Queen. She may be buried at Carrow Abbey, and not here at St.Mary's, Shelton, though her husband is buried here. Beautiful pictures of St. Mary's Church, including the stained glass portrait of Anne Boleyn Shelton, can be seen at:
