George does not appear in the 1850 or 1860 U.S. Censuses. He enlisted at 23 years of age for a 3-year term of service in Company B, 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, June 20, 1861. His name erroneously appears as "Sperrick" in the Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers, Volume 2, pp. 208 and 738. He was killed in action at the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862. Rank: Private. His mother, shown as Elizabeth Brith, applied for a pension based on his military service, Nov. 27, 1865 which was approved and issued as Certificate #84615. Nothing more could be found about Elizabeth short of checking George Sherrick's pension file papers located at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

George's name is inscribed on Panel #2 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio. It is also inscribed on the monument of the 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry located at Woodland Cemetery, 6901 Woodland Ave., Cleveland, Ohio.
