Emil was born on May 19, 1910 to George and Frances (Copp) Meister in Petoskey, Michigan. When he was nine months old, his family moved to Madison, Nebraska where he attended Liberty Consolidated School through the 8th grade. In 1927, his family moved to a farm near Gary, South Dakota where he worked on the farm.
Emil was united in marriage to Inez Hinneberg on December 19, 1936. Following their marriage, they farmed near Gary, South Dakota for three years. They moved to Detroit, Michigan where they lived for one year before returning to the farm near Gary. In 1958, they sold the farm and Emil began working in road construction. In the fall of 1963, they moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota where he worked as the Maintenance Supervisor at the School for the Blind. Emil worked there until his retirement in 1975. In 1984, they moved back to Gary, South Dakota. Inez passed away on June 6, 1992. Emil continued living in his home in Gary until March 22, 2002 when he entered the Deuel County Good Samaritan Home in Clear Lake, South Dakota. On Wednesday, January 21, 2004 Emil passed away at the Deuel County Memorial Hospital, Clear Lake, South Dakota at the age of 93 yrs, 8 months, and 2 days.
Emil was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary, South Dakota. He enjoyed playing cards, visiting and having lots of company.
He is survived by four children; Shelby (Roger ) Hanson, Madison, MN, Janice Rose, Denver, CO, Curtis (Mary Kay) Meister, St. Paul, MN and Karen Ferguson, Canby, MN; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; two brothers, Jack Meister, Detroit, MI and Joe (Lillian ) Meister, Detroit, MI; and many nieces and nephews.
Emil was preceded in death by his wife, Inez;; grandson, Gary Ferguson, granddaughter, Debbie Rose; parents; one full brother, Pete Meister; five half brothers, George and Chester Meister, Mike, Ed and Martin Helmberger; one full sister, Margaret Christine; and five half sisters; Kate, Anna and Mary Meister and Mary and Frances Helmberger.
