John, the youngest of five children, was born to George and Mary Laing Cuckie at Brookline, Mo. As a child, John lived on the Mill Farm at Dakota City, the Rosedale Farm in Fort Dodge, and graduated from Burnside High School with the class of 1939.
During World War II, John joined the U.S. Navy serving in the South Pacific aboard a destroyer support ship. When John returned stateside he met Elma Larcenasi in Chicago. They were married on June 18, 1945 in Joliet, Illinois.
Upon returning to Webster County, John began farming near Fort Dodge. He and Elma had four children, Frank, John, Lynn and George. They were later divorced.
On April 2, 1974 John married Nancy Schmoker. At that time John farmed the Rosedale Farm and continued to farm until his retirement. John and Nancy lived in Donna, Texas for 20 years before moving to Conway, SC. in 2006.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Elma; sons Frank and John; sister Sarah Jenks of Fort Dodge; brothers George Cuckie of Humboldt and Athol Cuckie of Fort Dodge; and infant sister, Louise; step daughter Susan Schmoker.
He is survived by his wife Nancy of Conway, SC; daughter Lynn (Randy) Smith of Bagley, IA; son George (Debbie) Cuckie of Cortez, Colorado; grandchildren Amy (Matt) McCabe of Tucson, AZ, Ben (Nikki) Christopher of Perry, Iowa, Kyle Christopher and Mark Christopher both of Adel, Iowa; Andrew Cuckie and Emma Cuckie both of Cortez, Colorado; Great granddaughter, Jhet Ella Christopher, of Perry, Iowa; stepdaughters Jane (Jim) Quade of Fort Dodge and Barb (Denny) Utley of Conway, SC.; and several nieces.
