Mystic, Occultist, Author. Designer of a popular Tarot deck. He became a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1891, a Freemason in 1901, and joined the Societas Rosicruciana in 1902. Given to controversy, he soon caused turmoil in the Order of the Golden Dawn, which collapsed shortly afterwards, torn apart by internal dissent. Waite left the Societas Rosicruciana in 1914 to form the rival Fellowship of the Rosy Cross. He quickly made an enemy of Aleister Crowley, who vilified Waite in the magazine Equinox and based an evil character in one of his books on him, as did H.P. Lovecraft. Waite was a prolific author on the occult, alchemy, Freemasonry and the Holy Grail, was co-designer of the well-known Rider-Waite Tarot deck, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith, and wrote a guide to Tarot reading, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (published by W. Rider, London, 1911), which is still available in print and on the Internet.
