Alexander Burnside Chafee was the son of Isaac McGregor Chafee and his wife Frances Anne Stotesbury.

He married Matilda Craig, daughter of Thomas and Matilda Craig of Craighurst.

Alexander was educated at a private school in Hamilton, Ontario. He then attended Upper Canada College. While there he served with the Queen Ann's Rifle from March to June of 1866.

He achieved his BA at Trinity College, Toronto, Ontario in 1873, and his MA in 1886.
He was made deacon at St James' Church, Dundas, Ontario on October 11, 1874 and ordained priest on October 15, 1876 at Toronto.

Charges:
- 1874-5 curate to F.L. Osler, worked principally in West Flamborough for 18 months.
- 1876 Erindale, Dixie and Port Credit.
- 1879-82 missionary at Craighurst and Vespra
- 1882-6 Perrytown.
- 1886-8 Alliston and West Essa.
- 1888-1911 Coboconk.
- 1910-12 first master of King George V Lodge, No. 498, Coboconk.

In 1911, Alexander retired to Kingston because of ill-health.
