Married William Read Welch on 9 Oct 1856 in Taita & had 9 children
Sarah was a woman of great fortitude who contributed much to the community in Taita. She led the Sewing Union, which was the main source of funds for Christ Church, Taita. She had the misfortune to lose her 9 year old son Arthur Wellesley Welch in 1871 when he was killed by a horse while staying in the Wairarapa.
Her mother-in-law Ann Welch died in 1879 and her husband William became mentally unwell. He committed suicide in 1881 aged 49, leaving her to bring up 8 children, the youngest then aged 7 .
Sarah continued to live in Laurel Hall and looked after her father-in-law William Welch (1804-1887). William died at her home in 1887 aged 82. When her daughters died, she took in her grandchildren.
