Joseph was a son of Joseph Hewlett Percy (1797-1864) & Esther Mary Pearce Sherborne (1803-1873). He emigrated to NZ at the age of 19 with his parents and 3 siblings. He married Anne Marie Welch on 23 Oct 1848 in the 2nd St James Church, in Aglionby-on-the-Hutt (which Lower Hutt was then known), built in 1848 by himself and his father, Joseph Hewlett Percy, (J. H. Percy & Sons), builders. Christ Church Taita didn't open until 1 Jan 1854.
