Joseph was a son of Joseph Hewlett Percy (1797-1864) & Esther Mary Pearce Sherborne (1803-1873). He emigrated to NZ at the age of 19 with his parents and 3 siblings. They left London 2 Oct 1841, arriving into Port Nicholson 17 Feb 1842, on the Clifton .. https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/genealogy/Clifton.htm

He married Anne Marie Welch on 23 Oct 1848 in the 2nd St James Church, in Aglionby-on-the-Hutt (which Lower Hutt was then known), built in 1848 by himself and his father, Joseph Hewlett Percy, (J. H. Percy & Sons), builders. Christ Church Taita didn't open until 1 Jan 1854.

The Friends of Mr Joseph Percy are respectfully invited to attend his Funeral, which will leave his late residence (Petone) for the Taita Cemetery, Tuesday, 16th March 1886, at 3 p.m. E. and A. Collett, Undertaker, Petone
