William Slocomb Brown was born November 13, 1821 in Dudley, Worcester, Massachusetts. He married Sarah Ann McCraken on October 13, 1848. He was listed as this time as being a shoemaker. William and Sarah had at least seven children: John William, Mary Lucy, Sarah Allen, George, Frances J., Emma E., and an infant whom died at birth.

William S. Brown was a Private in Company D commanded by Captain E. Boardman of the 21st Regiment of Iowa in the War of 1861. Private William S. Brown served in Port Gibson, Black River Bridge and seige of Vicksburg.

He died in Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Washington DC on or about Sept. 4th 1864. The cause of his death was insanity produced by a stroke which he had while in the service.
