Around 1854 Nancy and Louis went to Oregon along with her parents and some of her brothers and sisters. It was said that Nancy walked/rode a horse the entire way. The Maupins did not like living in Oregon because it was too "wet and musty." After a year they decided to move back to Missouri. They came up the Mississippi River on a boat.
