Betty Lou Van Sant, daughter of William and Grace (Van Donselaar) Van Sant, was born December 21, 1934, the shortest day of the year, on a farm south of Galesburg, Iowa. She passed away on February 15, 2023, at the age of 88 years.

Betty attended the Peoria Christian Grade School in Peoria, Iowa, and graduated from the 8th grade. On July 4, 1953, she was united in marriage to John Arie Vande Kraats, from Pella, Iowa. They lived two miles north of Pella on the Vande Kraats farm. To this union one daughter was born, Bonnie June. Betty was preceded in death by her husband John, who died on September 22, 1993, at the age of 64.

On September 5, 1998, Betty was married to Elvin Van Wyk. They were married for eleven years, when Elvin passed on September 10, 2009, at the age of 79.

Others preceding Betty in death were her parents William and Grace Van Sant, parents-in-law: Walter and Lizzie Vande Kraats, daughter Bonnie June, her brother Gerald Van Sant, and nephew Ben Van Dyke.

Those left to mourn her loss are her sisters: Janice and Sherwood Bouma, Milly and Al Van Dyke, sister-in-law Marilyn (Gerald) Van Sant, many nieces and nephews, and numerous grand nieces and grand nephews.

Betty was a faithful member of Heartland Reformed Church where she served as organist. She also served as pianist at Hickory Grove Church. She had many friends in both of these congregations. For many years, she was a volunteer leader of the Friendship Bible Study group at C.O.C.

Betty was a very social person and loved gathering with friends and neighbors. She loved music and it gave her great joy to share the song in her heart. She loved writing too. Her books are on display on the Fellowship tables. She also loved farming, and knew how to run all the farming equipment. Up until the very end she was deeply involved in the decisions regarding the Vande Kraats farm where she had lived for 45 years.
