BAKER - On the 4th October, 1921, at his residence, "Dawlish" Waterloo-road, Lower Hutt, Venerable William George Baker, in his 74th year.
Nelson Evening Mail, 6 Oct 1921
ARCHDEACON BAKER. The Bishop of Nelson (Dr Sadlier) has been advised that the death occurred on Tuesday last at Lower Hutt, of Archdeacon Baker, formerly of the Waimea, Nelson.
Archdeacon Baker had not been well for some time past but the news of his death came as a great shock to the Bishop and clergy of the diocese where he had laboured for thirty years. The deceased was trained at the Church Missionary Society College, Islington and ordained by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1872. He then proceeded to India under the Church Missionary Society, but owing to the climate had to return in 1882 and for two or three years he was a clergyman in Dorsetshire. In 1884 he came to New Zealand on the invitation of Bishop Suter and ministered at Wakefield, Richmond and Brightwater. In 1893 he succeeded Bishop Mules at Brightwater and was appointed Archdeacon of the Waimeas in 1908. He retired at the end of 1914.
Residents of Nelson and the Waimeas will remember well his fine personal characteristics and his genial, willing and happy nature. One son, Donald, is now Bishop of Bendigo and the other, Harold, is Vicar of one of the leading Anglican churches in Sydney. The third son, William, is in the cable service.
The Bishop of Nelson has requested the Rev O. J. Kimberley to represent the diocese at the funeral
Their 4th son, Donald Baker (1882-1968), became Anglican bishop and principal of Ridley College, Melbourne
