Dr. Abshire was admitted to Holston Conference on Probation in 1934. In 1936 he was given Full Connection and was ordained Deacon. In 1938 he was ordained elder. Emory and Henry College bestowed upon him an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree in 1963. He retired in 1972 but continued to serve a church for eight more years. Dr. Abshire's appointments were the following; Religious Educator/Chaplain of Hiwassee College (1936-1939), First Methodist church in Richlands (1939-1944), St. Paul Methodist Church in Wytheville (1944-1949), First Methodist Church in Pulaski (1949-1954), Brainerd United Methodist Church in Chattanooga (1954-1959), Magnolia Avenue United Methodist Church in Knoxville (1959-1960), First United Methodist church in Morristown (1960-1962), District Superintendent of Cleveland District (1962- 1968), Reynolds Memorial United Methodist in Bristol (1968-1972), Semi-retired at Red Hill United Methodist Church in Chattanooga (1972-1980).
Dr. Abshire passed away at the Life Care Center of Cleveland, Tennessee, on February 16, 2000, and was buried beside his wife in Mountain View Cemetery in Bristol, Virginia. He often talked of all the friends he had and the special times at the churches he served over the years. His mother was a great influence in his life, and he truly loved God.
