w/o James Ashcom, born Aug 21, 1790 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. The Ashcoms came from England and owned a plantation and slaves in Maryland until they lost it due to hard times and financial problems.

James and Elizabeth are enumerated in the 1850 census in Westmoreland County, PA, and the 1860 census in Porter County, IN. Two known children are Mary (Ashcom) Pelton of Louisville, KY, and Rebecca (Ashcom) Morris Pierce of Valparaiso, IN (buried in Illinois), both born in Ligonier, Westmoreland County. Other children born in Westmoreland County, PA might be John (b. 1819), Susannah (b. 1821), William (b. 1821), Thomas (b. 1832), and Hugh (b. 1835), although some of these may belong to John Ashcom, brother of James. James had a twin sister, Amelia Ann, wife of Dr. William T. Martin of Columbus, OH.

The Jefferson County Death Register of Nov 1869 states that Elizabeth was married (not widowed), indicating James Ashcom might still be living, but records in Indiana and Kentucky do not say.
