Collegiate and professional football player. Windbiel played college football at the University of Dayton, where he was a three-time letterman in 1913, 1915, and 1916 and served as team captain in 1916. He also played varsity basketball. He joined the Detroit Heralds in 1917, remaining with the club until 1919. In 1921, Windbiel joined the Evansville Crimson Giants of the American Professional Football Association (later renamed National Football League). A center, he appeared in five games for Evansville. He began the following year with Evansville but did not see playing time during the regular season.
