Alfredo was born on March 15, 1931 in Maxial Beira Baixa, Portugal. He moved to Canada in 1957 and was very proud to be a Canadian and often said it was the "best country in the world".
Alfredo worked in forestry for 30 years in Geraldton, retiring in 1990. He came to Thunder Bay in 1992.
Alfredo was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren, as he spent many hours playing games with them and they always made him smile.
He was an avid gardener and he loved to read, learn new things and travel to Portugal, and in the later years, he enjoyed the trips to Mexico, Cuba and Dominican Republic.
Alfredo was a member of the Portuguese Association and he spent time at the 55 Plus Centre playing cribbage.
Survived by his wife Antonia; son Carlos (Celeste) Hortinha; daughters Maria DeJesus (Dave) and Elizabeth (David) Reid; grandchildren Kevin and Marlene Hortinha; Daniel and Nicole DeJesus and Andrew and Nicholas Taphorn; great-granddaughter Leonor Hortinha;
sister Olivia (Portugal) brothers Antonio (Portugal) and Manuel (France) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents Jose Artur and Maria da Conceicao deJesus; brothers Alberto and Mario and sisters-in-law Matilde and Maria Joaquina.
Prayers will be offered on Friday, October 21, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel ofJenkens Funeral Home. Visitation for family and friends will be held after prayers until 9:00 p.m. The funeral service for Mr. Gama will be held at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 9:30 a.m.
