Anson - Leon Thurman, 92, died Wednesday, February 27, at Anson General Hospital. Services will be 2:00 Saturday, March 1, 2008, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Ron Brown officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home.

Born September 18, 1915 in Knox County, Leon was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Chester Thurman. He graduated from Anson High School and Hardin Simmons University. Leon was an U. S. Air Corp veteran of World War II, where he earned several distinguished honors. Leon married Geneva Albritton, June 7, 1941 in Hamlin. He was Jones County District Clerk for twelve years and later served as state representative from 1959 to 1963. After returning to Anson, Leon was elected Jones County Judge for sixteen years.

Leon was a member of the Anson Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Masket Temple, Dallas Scottish Rite, the Anson Hospital Board, and the First Baptist Church where he served as Deacon. Leon was named Anson?s Man of the Year for 1984.

Leon was preceded in death by a grandson (Kirk), one sister, and two brothers.

Survivors include a son, Britt Thurman of Abilene; a daughter, Donna Lynn McGinty and husband, Ken of Houston; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
