From Schaetter Funeral Home:

William ("Bill") Atterson Gary of Fredericksburg died on February 9th at the age of 96.

Bill was born in Terry, Mississippi on June 19, 1926. He was the youngest of four brothers, all of whom served in the U.S. Navy. After completing his military duty he pursued a chemical engineering degree at the University of Mississippi. While there he met Eunice Greenway from Knoxville, Tennessee and they married in 1949. Bill graduated in 1952 and began his professional career with Union Carbide in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

In 1955, the couple and their two young children moved to Lake Jackson, Texas where Bill began a 30 year career with the Dow Chemical Company. He was a production manager in Freeport, Texas, and also worked on Dow projects in Holland, Germany, and California. Two more children were born during this period. As Bill neared retirement age, the couple began searching for a small town far from Gulf Coast hurricanes and mosquitos, and after numerous road trips and considerable research, they settled on Fredericksburg, moving there in 1988. Bill fondly referred to their new home as "the promised land."

After settling in, Bill and Eunice joined the United Methodist Church and began volunteering with several organizations including Meals on Wheels, the Hospice Thrift Store, HCM Hospital, the Nimitz Museum, Pioneer Library, the Fredericksburg Food Pantry, and the Golden Hub Community Center. Bill helped senior citizens prepare their federal tax returns and taught classes on the Texas driver's license written test. Bill and Eunice enjoyed traveling, Volkssport Walking Club events, visiting with family and friends, and playing bridge.

Bill was preceded in death by Eunice in 2017 after 68 years of marriage. He is survived by one son and three daughters and their spouses: John and Debbe Gary of Spicewood, Texas; Linda and Rene Henry of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; Jean and Gary Bryant of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Kay and John Miller of Richmond, Texas. Other survivors include seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
