Virginia Unruh passed in her sleep on Nov. 5, 2022, two weeks short of her 96th birthday.

Virginia was born on Nov. 20, 1926 to Robert and Hattie Schroeder on a farm 5 miles southwest of Antigo, Wisconsin as Virginia Arlene Schroeder. She is predeceased by her three older siblings, Vera M. Tooley, Robert (Buck) Mac Schroeder, and Marjorie H. Schweitzer, and daughter Allyson Carlyle.

Virginia graduated from Antigo High School with the class of 1945 and in 1949 married Phil Carlyle. Together they had two children – the late Allyson Carlyle born in Detroit (who passed at 66 years old on April 5, 2020) and Robert J Carlyle born in Long Beach, Cali., who is 66 years old and currently lives in California. In 1966 Virginia married Ralph Unruh who was her partner until Ralph's passing in 2009.

One of her first jobs was at a telephone company as an operator for a short time but later became a waitress which she continued for most of her career until she retired in 1976.

She and Ralph made many long road trips to Alaska in their motorhome and loved salmon fishing there. She also loved to fish at local lakes and rivers.

Her childhood growing up on a farm was always her favorite topic. When she was 5 years old, she was driving horses to plow the fields and when big enough, she would stack bales of hay along with all the other chores the boys would normally do. Her older brother Buck would spend a lot of his time with her, taking her with him to town and constantly teasing her which she loved. She adored Buck very much.

In 1948 when she was 22 years old she moved to Long Beach, California with her best friend Doris, but after several months moved back to Antigo to help with her ailing father who died a few weeks later. She returned to California and after many more moves, ended up in Missoula, Montana in 1962. Other than the farm, her favorite home was in Superior, Montana where she spent 11 years making great friendships and enjoying her favorite pastimes of gardening and canning her vegetables, going on long walks, hanging out in the coffee shop all morning long with her friends, and playing solitaire or double solitaire (she especially loved winning at solitaire). She will be remembered for her kindness, quick wit, and persistent resourcefulness.

There will be a memorial in 2023, in Superior, at the Superior Cemetery on July 22, 2023 at 2 p.m.
