Manuel S. Duran, 76, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 12, 2005. He was born in Barstow on Feb. 1, 1929 to Pedro and Ambrosia Duran, who preceded him in death.Manuel was a car inspector for the Santa Fe Railroad for 43 years. He was a Marine Corps veteran, serving during the Korean War. Manuel graduated from Barstow High School in 1947 where he excelled in football, basketball, and track. He held numerous track records and was an avid weightlifter. He enjoyed working out, also. During his later life, Manuel loved watching football on television. Manuel was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Barstow. He is preceded in death by seven siblings, along with his parents.He is survived by his wife of 56 1/2 years, Cecelia Duran of Barstow; daughters, Kathryn Swagger and her husband, Mark, of Silver Lakes, Mary Mitchell and her husband, Bruce, of Barstow, and Vickie Farlow and her husband, Blaine, of Rancho Cucamonga; son, Mark Duran and his wife, Darla, of Barstow; sisters, Genevieve Cordova and Sylvia Cordova of Barstow; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
