She was a native of Oklahoma and grew up on a farm, but claimed Texas as her home after moving here. Over the years she became a world traveler and traveled to every continent except for Antarctica. Travel wasn't her only accomplishment as she authored 2 books, The First Texans and Sights and Sounds of Texas.

She loved children and worked hard to acquire a Bachelors and Master's degree in Education. She touched and shaped many lives throughout her 61 year teaching career. Although she taught almost every grade, her favorite subject to teach was fourth grade social studies. She made learning fun. After retiring from public school she taught college classes.

Carolyn was active in contesting. She wrote and performed skits, jingles, and poems. She won many prizes over the years by contesting and entering sweepstakes. She was active with her church and loved the Lord with all her heart. She enjoyed her Sunday school class as well as church services and events.

She fell in love with going on cruises with her friends. It became an annual event for over 12 years. She loved George Strait, played Bunco, loved Houston Astro's Baseball, shopping, the Houston Rodeo, and chocolate. She was always planning and hosting parties every month.

She was preceded in death by her husband James Sylvan Burnett, son Tommy Joe Butner, parents Baxter and Edra Mitchell, and brothers Carlos and Terry Mitchell. .
