Joseph Roy Gilbert, age 89, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 7:23 p.m. at Louisiana Extended Care in Lafayette. Interment in St. Peter Catholic Cemetery in Carencro. Melancon Funeral Home, Evangeline Memorial Gardens Chapel, 4117 N. University Ave., Carencro, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gilbert was a native and resident of Carencro for 65 years, having lived in Franklin for 20 years, and currently living in New Iberia. He had been a parishioner of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Carencro. He retired from Discount Furniture in 1968 - 1986. Mr. Gilbert was a veteran of the military, having served four years in the U.S. Airforce, one year in the Korean War, and was a Master Seargant in the Reserves for 19 years.

Survivors include his wife, the former Lydia Watkins Truxillo Gilbert of New Iberia; one step-son, Ronald Truxillo and his wife, Brenda, of Baton Rouge; one step-daughter, Darlene Morgan and her husband, Floyd, of Franklin; six step-grandchildren, Jessica Switzer and her husband, Scott, Tisha Daigle and her husband, Louis, Shane Morgan and his wife, Leslie, Quin Morgan and his wife, Erin, Lori Mouton and her husband, Troy, and David Truxillo and his wife, Tiffany; nine step-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Nola Gilbert of Sulphur, LA; three nephews, Frank Gilbert, Jr., Robert Gilbert, and Douglas Gilbert, all of Sulphur, LA; one niece, Margaret Busby of Sulphur, LA; and his caregiver for the past year, Curtis.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lena Gilbert; his parents, Oscar Gilbert and mother the former Clothilde Benton, both natives of Carencro; one step-great grandson, Alex Daigle; and one brother, Frank Gilbert.
