Services for Nellie Pottle Hankins, 88, Otisfield, Maine, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Otisfield Free Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gertrude DeCoteau officiating.

Mrs. Hankins died Monday, March 22, 1993, at Ledgeview Nursing Home in West Paris, Maine. She was born in 1904 at East Otisfield, Maine, to Fred Leroy Pottle and Annette Kemp Pottle.

In 1960, Mrs. Hankins earned a doctorate at Kansas University, where she also taught. In addition, she taught at the University of New Hampshire, the University of Massachusetts and the University of Maine.

She earned her master's degree in English literature at Yale University and was editor for the Yale Edition of the Private Papers of James Boswell. Her edition of the Estate Papers of James Boswell is forthcoming.

Mrs. Hankins was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, the American Association of University Women, P.E.O., the Ladies' Circle, Otisfield Free Baptist Church, the Otisfield Historical Society, and was active in Colby College alumni affairs.

She and John Erskine Hankins married in 1930. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a sister, Estelle Stone, Otisfield; a daughter, Margaret van Mourik, Lausanne, Switzerland; two sons, Thomas Hankins, Seattle, and David Hankins, Mansfield, Conn.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Interment will by in the Elmwood Cemetery, Otisfield, at a later date.
