Mary Evelyn McKinney
December 31, 1929 - February 7, 2023
Obituary by Harper Funeral Home and Crematory

Mary Evelyn McKinney "Evelyn" passed away on February 7, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones. Evelyn McKinney was born on December 31, 1929 in Eden, Texas to S.E. Stout, Jr. and Mary Emma Garlitz Stout. Evelyn was one of six siblings. She graduated from Reagan County High School at the age of 17 in 1947.

In early 1947, Evelyn went on her first date with R. L. McKinney to dance at the Melody Club in San Angelo. They married June 14, 1947 and danced together for 64 years. When the two danced, the dance floor would clear. The other dancers would step back and watch R. L. and Evelyn jitterbug. Evelyn (Nanny) also loved golf, gardening, and watching birds.

She loved her annual vacations to Ruidosa, New Mexico with her family along with half the population of Big Lake because all the families coordinated their trips together. Many of the vacationers were also avid golfers at the Big Lake Golf Course. Big Lake continues to have an annual golf tournament held in honor of Evelyn McKinney and Alyce Gooch.

Evelyn McKinney loved her family and especially the grandkids and great grandkids. Her title as Nanny was not only to her own grandkids, but to many other kids too. As children growing up in the 50's, Evelyn's kids felt like they grew up in a "Leave It to Beaver" setting, complete with the stylishly dressed to the nines Mom.

Music brought joy to Mother's heart. She knew every song to almost every old hymn or Christmas hymn. She loved her 1st Methodist Church in Big Lake. When she moved to San Angelo and attended Glen Meadows Baptist Church, praising and singing to the Lord brought her to a full state of joy. "Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs." Psalm 100:1-2.

The family is so grateful to Lyndale for the care and love they gave Mother. Lyndale embraced her as one of their own and named her "Twinkle Toes" because she was still dancing to the end. After her move to Springs Memory Center two weeks ago, she was renamed "Sassy". The family is also grateful to them for the care and love they gave her. To Stephanie Melendez, the family would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Stephanie Melendez for the love and care she gave to Mother. Mother adored her.

Evelyn is survived by her three children, R. L. "Pete" McKinney and his wife, Patrice, Cheryl deCordova(sic) and her husband, Aubrey, and Lorri Jenkins and her husband, Mike, her brother, Butch and his wife, Sharon, six grandchildren, Rachel Beaver and her husband, Jonathan, Leonadis and his wife, Leigh, Scott Jenkins, Kayla Neatherlin and husband, Blake, Clay deCordova and wife, Shelia, and Emily deCordova, seven great grandchildren, Joshua Beaver, Christopher Beaver, Keira Neatherlin, Jace Neatherlin, Emeline McKinney, Taylor Grassman and husband, Chase, and Matthew deCordova and wife Katelyn, two great-great grandchildren, Cooper Grassman and Adaline deCordova, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and soulmate, R. L. McKinney, Jr. and her parents, her brother, Seth Stout and his wife, JoAnne, brother Billy Stout, sister, Joyce Johnson and her husband, Roy, brother John Stout.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 9 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Harper's Funeral Home.

Funeral will be Friday, February 10th at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Meadows Baptist Church. Graveside will be at Glen Rest Cemetery in Big Lake at 1:00 p.m.
