Preston Campbell

Preston G. Campbell, 79, a lifelong resident of Roby passed away Wednesday, February 15, 1978 in his home surrounded by his loved ones. Funeral services were held Friday, February 16, at the Roby Church of Christ with his nephew, Richard Melton of Port Arthur, and Wardell Halliburton, minister of the Church officiating. Burial followed in the Roby Cemetery directed by Weathersbee Funeral Home.

Born in Roby on August 14, 1898, he was the son of the late Owen S. and Louella Campbell. Preston married Fila Rae Melton on December 26, 1920 in Rotan. He was a Christian devoted to his Church and family. A member of the Roby Church of Christ, he led singing and taught the Adult Bible Class for the past 36 years. That wonderful voice blessed the lives of family and friends alike. He co-owned and operated the Roby Hydro Company until retiring several years ago.

Mr. Campbell was a friend to all who knew him and touched the lives of many people with a smile and a song. A kind and gentle person with a great sense of humor, he will be greatly missed by his family and friends and will be remembered for the love of music he brought into our lives, the happiness that followed where ever he went, and his gifts he so generously shared with all.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Fila of the home; a son, Morris Owen "M.O." Campbell of Houston; a sister Stella Mae Brooks of Caliente, California; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Pall bearers were Frank Mitchell, Foy Mitchell, Kerm Terry, Dono Terry, Lynn Randolph, Jack Smith, James Cave, and Mansel Randolph.
