Mr. Sprouse was born in the Kelly-Kelton community of Union Co., July 19, 1929, a son of the late John Wallace Sprouse and Pauline Howell Sprouse. A graduate of Kelly-Pinckney High School, he was a member of the 1947 State Championship basketball team. Mr. Sprouse was retired from Milliken and Company, Lockhart Plant and was a veteran of the US Army having served during the Korean War. He was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church and was a member of the Lockhart Masonic Lodge for over 65 years.
The last surviving member of his immediate family, he is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Mary Ellen; three daughters, Deborah Gilchrist and husband Tim of Sharon, Phyllis Gibson of Lockhart and Rita McLeod and husband Scott of Chapin; six grandchildren, Jimmy Gilchrist and wife Carla, Rebecca Gilchrist, Rachel Trent and husband Mathew, Corey Gibson and wife Elyssee, Malcolm McLeod and wife Laura and Thomas McLeod and wife Brooke; five great-grandchildren, Avery and Finnley Trent, Mac, Jackson, and Sidney McLeod and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Sprouse was predeceased by a sister, Wallace Erma Blackmon, and five brothers, JG, Harold, Ralph, Fred and Dan Sprouse.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, February 6, 2023, at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Monday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the chapel prior to the services.
Mr. Sprouse's grandsons and nephews, Tom Jones and Gene Sprouse will serve as active pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Joy Baptist Church, 657 Pea Ridge Hwy., Jonesville, SC 29353.
The family will be at their respective homes.
