Castleton Leatherman, son of Daniel Leatherman and Mary Ann (Polly) Wilson Leatherman, enlisted in the Civil War as John Castleton Leatherman on July 1, 1861 He was 21 year old, as a private in Co. E. 5th Iowa Infantry. Mustered into U.S. service at Camp Warren, Burlington, Iowa on July 15, 1861. He was promoted to corporal on April 24, 1863. He was K.I.A. on May 16, 1863 at the Battle of Champion Hill and was initially buried next day on the Battlefield.
He never married.
