Former Garden City mayor Rupert Wayne Bazemore, 82, died Jan. 4 at Moss Oaks Convalescent Center in Pooler.
He was born in Screven County and lived in Garden City for many years. He was the widower of Lois Reddick Bazemore.
He served as a Garden City alderman from 1954 to 1961 and was mayor from 1961 to 1973. He was instrumental in the formation of Garden City Recreation Department, and in the construction of the Westside Stadium and Garden City Gymnasium.

He was appointed by the Gov. Jimmy Carter to served on the Georgia State Board of Plumbers as an inspector.
He was a member of Plumbers, Steamfitters and Air Conditioners Local No. 188 for 50 years.
He was a member of Garden City United Methodist Church since 1944 and a member of the Administrative Board. He also served as chairman of the church's Board of Trustees and was a member of the Men's Adult Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Men.
SURVIVORS: three sons and daughters-in-law, Britton and Margie Bazemore, and the Rev. Jerry and Pam Bazemore, all of Garden City, and Dennis and Nancy Bazemore of Orange Park, Fla.; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Hubert C. Baker Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel.
FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Friday at Garden City United Methodist Church, burial in Buck Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery near Sylvania.
