Kenneth Ross George passed away peacefully on January 25, 2023. Viewing will be at Morrison Funeral Home on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 10:00 am, in Graham, Texas. Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 AM and burial will follow at Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Kenneth was born Aug. 15, 1935, in Graham, Texas, to Vernon and Ethel York George. He was raised in Graham and played football for the Steers. He and his lifelong friend, Bill Atwood, were captains of the 1952 District 12-AA Championship team. Kenneth & Bill both made the 12-AA All-District Football Team.
After graduation, he traveled to El Paso, Texas, to attend Texas Western College (UTEP) on a football scholarship. He was a four-year starter and letterman. It was not an easy task being a lineman at 6 feet tall and 185 pounds. His accomplishments included being All Border Conference squads in 1954 & 1956, voted team's outstanding blocker his sophomore and junior years, and elected team captain of the TWC Border Conference Championship Team in 1956. He played in three Sun Bowl games, two of which (Mississippi Southern in 1954 and Florida State in 1955) were wins. He was elected to the El Paso Times/El Paso Herald Post TWC Post-World War II All-Star Team. In December 1956, the El Paso Herald Post wrote " He will end his football career as one of the finest lineman in the history of Texas Western College".
Prior to leaving TWC, he earned his Master's Degree in Education and served as a football coaching assistant at TWC for 5 years before moving to Abilene, Texas to coach high school football. After 2 years, he returned to El Paso where he continued his coaching career. He continued to climb the career ladder by entering school administration and became a principal. In 1981, he was inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame where he was honored for his college football career. He rose to the position of Associate Superintendent for the El Paso Independent School District before retiring with over 40 years of service. Retirement was short-lived as, 6 months later, he was asked by EPISD to return as the Interim Superintendent. He served in this capacity for a year and then went on to fill the same position for the next few years in several other districts in and around El Paso. He worked for Region 19 Education Service Center and assisted additional Texas school districts outside of El Paso before completely retiring in his 70s.
Kenneth is survived by his first wife and mother of his 3 children, Jo Mae George of El Paso, TX, Son V.A. George (Melanie) of Beaumont, CA, Daughter Kenna George of El Paso, TX, Daughter Paige Hall (Stephen) of Ft. Worth, TX, and grandchildren Cody Rodela, Libby Hall, Madison & Tyler George.
He was preceded in death by wife Gloria Perry George, parents Vernon & Ethel York George, Sister Cassie Owens, and brothers Robert, Jim and Bill George.
