Mable Mercer Pittman, 92, of Belmont, N.C. passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Feb. 7, 1930, in Gastonia, N.C. She was the daughter of the late William W. and Alice Mosley Mercer and the fifth of seven children.

Mable's life was centered around faith and family. She had a servant's heart that she utilized across a long career in childcare. She collaborated with her daughter-in-law to open, own, and operate Country Acres Day and After School Care, where she was affectionately known as "Mrs. Mable." She also worked in quality control for Burlington Industries at the Modena Plant in Gastonia.

She was a consummate caretaker of her grandchildren throughout her work life and subsequent retirement. To Mable's delight and joy, the grandkids likely spent more time at "Maw Maw's and Paw Paw's" than they did at their own homes.

She was active in her children's education, serving in various leadership roles on both PTA's and vacation bible schools. She taught children's Sunday School and was active in the Lady's Ministries. Mable and her late husband, Boyd, were members at Lowell Church of God and were active in their Seniors group.

Devoted to her family, Mable prayed for each of her loved ones by name on a daily basis. She loved her church, and in recent months, when unable to physically attend, she would watch the Sunday services online, joining in the singing and worship.

Mable was skilled in the kitchen and everyone else benefited, whether by enjoying her canned relishes and jams or her famous desserts such as black walnut pound cake and blueberry cobbler. She also loved hosting family and friends for her traditional New Year's Day holiday dinner.

She had a masterly green thumb and loved to share what she produced with family and friends. The wide range of plants in her backyard included many varieties of Christmas cacti, lilies, Iris, peonies, and mums. She also enjoyed growing tomatoes, blueberries, and figs in her garden.

Her hobbies included jigsaw puzzles, arts and crafts, and TV gameshows. She was adept at sewing and often did alterations for her family.

Mable was designated a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation.

Mable is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 72 years, Boyd Calvin Pittman, her parents, her brothers, Ernest and Reverend Foy Mercer, and her sisters, Dottie Benoy and Lorene Stamey.

Mable is survived by two sons and one daughter ; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one brother and one sister.

The family extends a special thanks to caregiver Brenda Lewis and Gaston Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Gaston Hospice, P.O. Box 3984, Gastonia, N.C., 28054 and Lowell Church of God, 804 W. 1st St., Lowell, N.C. 28098.

A visitation will be held from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Sunday, January 29, 2023 at McLean Funeral Directors in Gastonia, NC.
