After high school, Jesse enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as a rifleman in the infantry. He served with distinction and was honorably discharged in 1957. He attended the Devry Technical Institute in Chicago and earned a degree in electronics. Chicago was also where he met his future wife, Marilyn, who was training to become a nurse. Jesse & Marilyn had 3 children together.
With the space program winding down he decided to earn a bachelor's degree in Accounting. This turned into a new career as a defense contractor auditor and they moved to California in 1975. In 1981 he accepted a position in Saudi Arabia where he audited government defense contracts for a joint Saudi/US project. In 1984 they returned to the Bay Area, and he was transferred to Anchorage, Alaska in 1986.
